Lesbian relationships are romantic relationships between women. These relationships have become common in today’s world. In this blog, I will walk you through diverse expressions and identities of lesbian relationships. I will also inform you about the challenges that they face. In addition, there are many myths about lesbian relationships.

Lesbian relationship.

Lesbianism is a natural expression of sexual orientation. One has very little, if any, control over it. Like any relationship, it varies in how one communicates, behaves, handles conflicts, and expresses intimacy.

Did you know that both young teenage girls and married women practice lesbianism? It is a natural feeling from within. Surprisingly, research has shown that lesbian relationships offer more care, comfort, and companionship. They usually form a stronger emotional bond and satisfaction than straight relationships. Many lesbian couples prefer to hang out and spend most of their time together. They end up feeling happier and more relaxed.

Is marriage important?

Marriage can be important because it offers love, commitment, companionship, and a stable foundation for building a family. However, marriage is only valuable when it brings respect, peace, honesty, and emotional safety. A person should not marry because of pressure, fear, or society’s expectations. The best marriage helps both partners grow, support each other, and face life’s challenges together with patience, trust, shared purpose, and joy.
Research has found that Married couples in a stable relationship experience better health. They offer support during times of distress. Naturally, women who do not find male partners to settle down with might develop lesbianism. With this in mind, it is important to respect them rather than condemn them. It is not their fault that they became lesbians.

Are you a lesbian?

Genetic factors affect lesbian relationships. Most women discover their sexuality at the beginning of adolescence. When they notice a strong romantic or emotional attraction to other women, some may feel more interested in dating, loving, or building a future with women than with men. There is no single way to look, act, or dress as a lesbian because sexuality is personal. The most important sign is how someone truly feels inside, not what others expect from them.

Little-known Aspects of Lesbian Relationships

lesbian relationshipsAny woman can be a lesbian. When a woman flirts with you or gives all the attention you require, you might end up in lesbianism. In this case, it will be against your will. Lesbian relationships are not just for sexual satisfaction. Indeed, they offer emotional connection and intimacy just like any straight relationship. Gradually, the couple fall in love with each other.

Ever Dreamt With Another Woman?

Generally, having an intimate dream with another woman does not make you a lesbian. At least once in your lifetime, you have dreamt of being in an intimate relationship with another woman. It’s normal and should not worry you. Moreover, it does not define you as a lesbian. Just like straight relationships, love and attraction for each other determine lesbian relationships.

Do Lesbian Relationships Break Up?

Did you know that lesbian relationships also face conflicts, misunderstandings and breakups? Additionally, they experience good and bad times. The couples involved require communication, respect, trust, and commitment for the relationship to thrive.

Naturally, lesbian relationships are a valid and natural part of human sexuality. Nobody chooses to become a lesbian. On the contrary, a person becomes attracted to someone irrespective of the gender. However, the social Environment greatly determines whether one will become a lesbian or not.

How you dress, pose, talk, and laugh does not make you a lesbian. It is your self-identification that makes you one. With this in mind, never judge a woman by her looks. Some are masculine and yet not lesbians. Others dress more like men because of their personal choices and interests, and nothing more. With this in mind, never judge someone’s sexuality based on how she dresses.

Nevertheless, lesbian relationships are not free from health risks. The couple is at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases just like any other relationship. One is at risk of contracting cervical cancer and should always go for screening. Remember, screening is important for every sexually active woman.

Myths in lesbianism

There are many misconceptions about lesbianism. These include,

Being a lesbian is by choice.

Sexual orientation is genetic. Many people think that lesbianism is a choice. Well, it is not. Most people will have no choice in their sexuality. However, if you do not want to be a lesbian, there are measures you can take to avoid becoming one, such as counselling and therapy.

You can tell a lesbian by her looks.

A lesbian cannot physically be differentiated. Looks are deceiving. Some women prefer to dress like men, yet they are not lesbians. Others will prefer to shave their hair, yet they are in straight relationships. Nowadays, in many African countries, short hair is fashionable. Research has shown that 1 in every 10 ladies has shaved their hair.

lesbianism and masculinity….

One person in a lesbian relationship has to act in a masculine way.

Lesbians who appear masculine or behave as males do so for their interests. However, as I said earlier, many women who have biological inadequacies (such as small breasts, broad shoulders, and a horse voice) may develop lesbianism due to an inferiority complex. They may not feel attractive enough to be around men.

Lesbians hate men

The fact that a woman feels emotionally attracted to another woman does not make her hate men. Some women become lesbians while still in straight relationships. Others become lesbians after a breakup with their husbands. Furthermore, they feel more emotionally attracted to women than men. Any girl who faced sexual abuse during childhood will feel safer around other girls, away from boys. She will grow knowing that boys are bad. She will spend all her time with them, consequently leading to lesbianism.

Lesbians are immoral and Non-Godly.

Many denominations condemn lesbian relationships. However, a few of them support it. In 2022, I visited a church in Kenya where all the worshippers are lesbians, including the pastor. Have you heard about it on any social media platform? Lesbians seek acceptance and support from society by forming their own organisations and groups. In this era, they have resorted to having their own worship centres away from people who rebuke and harass them. They feel accepted and loved, away from members of the public who stare at them and view them as sinners in need of redemption.

causes of lesbianism

Did you read my previous blog on a teenage lesbian? I talked widely about the causes of lesbianism. Please click on that link above for more details. However, let me briefly outline some of these causes.

From your peers

Did you know that you can acquire lesbianism from your friends? Any woman can become involved in lesbian relationships unwillingly. Indeed, if you hang around lesbians, chances are, you will become one as well. A lady might be a friend and be good to you to such an extent that whenever you require a friend to talk to, she will always be there for you. Slowly, she will flirt with you. After all, birds of the same feather flock together.

Genetics

Generally, girls with a boyish figure might find comfort in hanging around other girls. They feel inferior around boys as they consider themselves less attractive. Consequently, they develop feelings for the girls, resulting in lesbianism.

Social environment

Unfavourable social Environment is another cause of lesbianism among girls. Girls who live in an environment with no boys around consequently engage in masturbation. Many of them are unable to control their sexual urges. They result in lesbianism, especially in boarding schools.

Divorce

Divorce is a major cause of lesbianism among women. When a woman separates from her husband, she is unable to control her sexual urge. She begins to masturbate, consequently ending up in lesbianism. It’s true if she fails to get another marriage partner.

Teenage girls are recruited into lesbian relationships by others who have been in them for a long time. An experienced girl may approach another teenager who has never been into it. She will try all methods, such as doing her favours and spending more time with her, to win her love. Eventually, she will flirt and seduce her into lesbianism.

How long do lesbian relationships last?

Nowadays, people in America support lesbianism more than they did a few years back. In 2015, LGBTQ became legalised and many lesbians were able to come out. However, how long a lesbian relationship lasts will depend on many factors. Like any straight relationship, love, faithfulness, and commitment determine how long a marriage lasts. Couples who are faithful, committed and respectful to each other stay together.

Challenges of lesbian relationships

Lesbians often face many problems in their love life. Some of these problems include,

lack of recognition

One of the problems that lesbians face is the lack of legal recognition in many countries. No matter how much two women love each other, Social barriers prevent them from being together. In many societies, it is illegal and punishable by law to engage in lesbianism. The society ignores and harasses lesbians. Conversely, many couples will not come out for fear of rejection. Instead, they will suffer in silence, leading to stress and depression.

Lesbians are few and invisible.

Because they fail to stand out from the general public, it is not possible to single one out from the crowd. Self-revelation is limited due to homophobia. It’s therefore not easy to know who is homosexual among many women and who is not. Many African schools suspend girls who engage in lesbianism. They punish the girls by expelling them for two weeks. They are harassed by their colleagues, families and the general public. No one understands how they feel. As a result, they keep their relationship secret.

Cancer and lesbianism

Higher rates of cancer.

Due to reduced access to cancer screening, lesbians risk their health. Many of them think that they are not at risk of cervical cancer because they are not sexually active with males. Contrary to their thinking, cervical cancer is more pronounced in lesbians. Research has shown that few lesbians go for screening. Cancer is detected at an advanced stage.

Drug abuse and mental problems in lesbian relationships.

Unfavourable social conditions can lead to depression, anxiety, drug abuse, or even suicide. The couple feels rejected, misunderstood, and isolated. To overcome the feeling, many of them resort to drug abuse.

Lesbians don’t enjoy their privacy in public places. Whenever they hang out with their loved ones, people stare and gossip about them. Some take photos and videos of them to share on social media.

Conclusion

Lesbian relationships are unique in their own way. Trust and faithfulness determine the kind of relationships that people have. No one would want to stay in a disrespectful and abusive relationship. On the other hand, no one wants to end an emotionally satisfying relationship that is full of respect, love and understanding.

Within the relationship, women may feel unseen, overlooked, and discriminated against in society. Life is challenging for them. Let’s all understand and appreciate each other the way we are.
